“I’m inspired by the wild: by the experience of nature.  It’s a strong emotional response.  This presentation describes how I work with planting to create dramatic, very long-season, high-impact, low-input gardens and landscapes that re-create the uplifting, immersive experiences of being surrounded by beautiful and breath-taking nature – in even the most urban of contexts.  I work with ‘designed plant communities’ that operate with the dynamics of natural, multi-layered vegetations, and that change dramatically over time.    I use traditional planting, seeding, and combinations of planting and seeding.  In the presentation I set out my planting design principles and influences, fully illustrated with examples from my own public and private design projects, including the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Buckingham Palace, and The Barbican London, Chelsea Flower Show gardens, as well as my own garden.  Particular emphasis is placed on climate-adapted planting, and practical establishment and maintenance techniques, with examples of no or low-irrigation landscapes, and water-sensitive design.”   – Nigel Dunnett
